A local fisherman was in for a surprise today when he reeled in a porbeagle shark 11 miles off the coast of Lyme Regis.
Virgil Turner was out fishing for bass aboard his boat, Quo Vadis, when he hooked what he initially thought was a tuna. However, after a gruelling 45-minute battle, he was astonished to discover he had caught a shark!
The porbeagle is a powerful, cold-water predator closely related to the great white shark, but they are not considered a threat to humans.
The remarkable catch had a happy ending with the shark safely released back into the sea and swimming away.
